"Captain Zoya Agarwal, who made history as the first Indian female pilot to fly over the North Pole, expressed her pride on Tuesday that India has the world’s largest number of women commercial pilots. PM Narendra Modi praised the achievements of women in his Independence Day speech and said that India has the most women pilots in civil aviation.
PM Modi said: “The nation is being driven by one single force: ‘women-led development’. We have the most women pilots in civil aviation.”
“He emphasised that women-led development is the key to the country’s progress. He said that India can proudly claim that it has the most women pilots in civil aviation. He also mentioned that women scientists are leading the Chandrayaan mission. He said that the G20 countries are also acknowledging the significance of women-led development…,” Modi said.
Agarwal responded: “PM Modi highlighted that India has the world’s largest number of women commercial pilots and I am extremely happy about this fact. This shows that women have been leading developments not only in the aviation sector but also in other sectors.”
Agarwal was the leader of an all-women flight India pilot team and flew the longest air route in the world from San Francisco (SFO) in the US to Bengaluru for the first time in 2021, crossing the North Pole, on a Boeing 777. She became the youngest woman pilot in India to fly a Boeing-777 in 2013.
On the 77th Independence Day, Modi addressed the nation from the Red Fort and said that India is focusing on women-led development, and highlighted the achievements made in various fields, including aviation and space missions.
He also talked about the role of women scientists at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in leading the Chandrayaan mission.
“Women scientists are leading the Chandrayaan mission. The G20 countries are also acknowledging the significance of women-led development…,” PM Modi said.
He also referred to the work done by women SHGs in rural India and said that it is his dream to see two crore women become “lakhpati”, and that the government is working on measures to achieve this goal.
He said: “It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati sisters in villages. When you go to a village, you will find 'bank-wali sister, Anganwadi sister and dawai-wali (medicine) sister. It is my dream to make two crore lakhpati sisters in villages.”"
